According to the flag code...anything "by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag" is the same as the flag. The shirt on your tee-shirt? It's the flag. It's not a "representation" of the flag...it IS the flag. According to the flag code. So yeah the guy at the top of the page is violating the flag code...big time. I will NOT wear any clothes that make me think "American flag" when I first look at it. The flag code also says "The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing." So if it your first thought is "flag" it is the flag; and if it is the flag it is a living thing. It should be treated with the same respect as any other living thing. Those two rules of thumb will go a long way when it comes to spotting violations.

By far, the biggest transgressions to flag etiquette are flying an unlit flag at night and using the flag as clothing.

In both cases, the "intentions" are "patriotic," but both are sins of laziness.

If someone is too cheap to buy a light for the flag, they should at get over the laziness and bring it in at night.

I love this site! I check in often. . . whenever the news is not enraging me enough! I'm surprised at how often I'm surprised at the bad flag etiquette, especially when it's being done by folks that should know better (politicians). You'd think I'd be jaded by now.

However, and with all due respect, I would like to pick hairs a bit. You often call foul when you find an item painted with stars and stripes. Things like the Vader mask, the cow shaped dairy dispenser, that hideous donkey thing, etc. And I am having trouble seeing how these things violate the flag code, because they are not flags. I'm not talking about the oven mitts (for shame! They almost moved me to violence!), or capes, or car covers (items made out of an American flag) I'm referring to decorating things with stars and stripes. I don't see the harm. Even the guy at the top of your own website is sporting a stars and stripes bow tie and hat (you weren't trying to be ironic, were you?). So am I on to something, or are you and I at ends?

Thanks for any time spent on this comment and thanks for the great website!
